Restoration of George Saba's house in Faihaven For the past several months, many members of Local 841 have been donating their time and skills to renovate and restore the home of Firefighter George Saba, who passed away this past year due to cancer. The work had begun long before Brother Saba's death, and continued for months after until the project was finally completed. Below is a statement issued by Firefighter Richard Spoor regarding all the work that has been done at Brother Saba's home:
May 15, 2008 - D.C. Tom Marginson's Retirement Party District Chief Tom Marginson recently retired from the NBFD after serving 34 years on the job. He was honored with a surprise retirement party at Cafe Funchal. Friends, family, and numerous department members attended the party. Congratulations and good luck to DC Marginson and best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement! April 24, 2008 - Firefighgters Receive Commendations New Bedford firefighters were awarded commendations from the New Bedford City Council at a recent meeting at City Hall (4-28-08) for their actions on March 5, 2008 at a working fire on Cleveland Street. The crews of Engine 6 and Ladder 3 Group B were recognized for their valiant efforts in rescuing a male occupant of the building who was trapped on the third floor of his tenement as heavy fire tore through the apartment below. Firefighters from Ladder 3 effected a rescue of the individual over a 35' ground ladder as the crew of Engine 6 held the heavy fire from defeating the rescue effort. The occupant was rescued unharmed as a result of their efforts. February 17, 2008 Retired Firefighter Ron Benedetti thanked by boy he rescued 25 years ago. August 5, 2007 The Southeastern Massachusetts Survivor's Fund held the first annual "Brian's Ride" in memory of New Bedford Firefighter Brian Mello. In all, over 325 motorcycles (about 350 riders) took part in the motorcycle ride, and over $6000 was raised for the cause. New Bedford firefighters were on hand to man the outdoor barbecue grill July 14-15, 2007 New Bedford Firefighters held a "Fill The Boot" drive to aid the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Organized by District Chief Michael Gomes, the fundraiser took place during the Whaling City Festival and raised a total of about $19,616.62. In all, 84 NBFD members and 2 civilian members took part in the event. Below are photos of the money being handed over to the New Bedford Credit Union to be processed and ready to be donated. Special thanks to the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) for counting the money.
