There are currently 7 engine companies and 3 ladder companies in New Bedford, supervised by 2 District Chief units.  The NBFD also currently maintains a reserve apparatus fleet that consists of 3 spare engines, and 1 spare ladder truck.
 


Engine Companies
 

Engine Co. # 1

Engine 1 is a 2002 Pierce Saber top-mount pumper.  It is equipped with a 1250GPM pump and a 500 gallon water tank.  Engine 1 is assigned to Station 2.

Engine Co. # 5

Engine 5 is a 1997 Simon/LTI quint, equipped with a 1500GPM pump, 500 gallon water tank, and a 75' rear-mounted aerial ladder.  It was purchased in 2003 from the city of Montclair, NJ.  Originally assigned as a "Quint" company, it is currently used as an engine company only.  Engine 5 is assigned to Station 5.

Engine Co. # 6

Engine 6 is a 2003 Pierce Saber equipped with a 1250GPM pump and a 500 gallon water tank.  It is identical to Engine 1's truck.  Engine 6 operates from Station 6 with Ladder 3.

Engine Co. # 7

Engine 7 is assigned this 1999 Pierce Saber pumper with a 1250GPM pump and a 500 gallon water tank.  E7 was the first truck in the city to be assigned the newer style "custom" fire apparatus built by Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton, WI.  Engine 7 is assigned to Station 7.

Engine Co. # 8

Engine 8 runs with this 1989 Spartan/Maxim pumper with a 1250GPM pump and a 750 gallon water tank.  Originally assigned to Engine 6 until 2003, it was reassigned to the reserve fleet as Engine 26.  It was assigned to Engine 5 briefly as well.  When Engine 8 was reorganized after being disbanded in 2003 due to budget cuts, the 1989 Maxim was rehabbed and assigned to Engine 8.  In 2008, Engine 8 is slated to receive a new pumper.

Engine Co. # 9

Engine 9 is assigned this 2001 Pierce Saber 1250GPM top mounted pumper with a 500 gallon water tank.  It is largely identical to Engine 7's pumper.

Engine Co. # 11

Engine 11 is assigned a 2005 Pierce Arrow XT top mounted pumper with a 1250GPM and 500 gallon water tank.  This truck features a lower pump panel for improved visibility on the fire ground and ease of use.  It is also equipped with a computerized pressure relief valve.

Ladder Companies
 


Ladder Co. # 1

Ladder 1 is assigned a 1994 Simon/LTI tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck with a 105' ladder.  It is the last tractor-drawn aerial truck in frontline service in the New Bedford Fire Department.  It is slated to be replaced in 2008.

Ladder Co. # 3

Ladder 3 operates this 2000 Pierce Lance rear-mounted aerial ladder with a 105' ladder.  It is equipped with "All-Steer" which is a system that turns all three axles.  This gives the truck greater maneuverability in narrow streets.  It was the first rear-mount aerial truck in the city.

Ladder Co. # 4

Ladder 4 is assigned this 2004 Pierce 105' rear-mounted aerial truck that originally served as a demonstrator for the Pierce Manufacturing Co. of Appleton, WI.  It was purchased used by the city in 2004 and assigned as "Quint 4" during the time when Engine 8 was disbanded.  When Engine 8 was reorganized, "Quint 4" was redesignated as Ladder 4 once again.

Special Units
 

Airport 9

Airport 9 is a 1990 Oshkosh T-1500 Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting vehicle (ARFF) housed at the New Bedford Regional Airport.  It is equipped with 1000 gallons of water and also has separate foam and dry chemical tanks.  Airport 9 has both bumper and roof-mounted turret nozzles.  It is staffed  by the members of Engine 7 when it is needed.

Marine 1

Marine 1 is a 1994 Parker 25' boat equipped with twin 125 hp yamaha outboard engines.  It is also equipped with a 300GPM pump mounted on the stern deck.  It is staffed by the members of Engine 1 when needed.

Rescue 1 (Out of Service)

Rescue 1 is a 1999 Freightliner FL70 chassis with a utility body.  Rescue 1 was organized in the mid 1990s and disbanded in 2002 due to budget cuts.  This truck is equipped with the mobile cascade system, which is used to refill SCBA breathing air bottles at fire scenes.  It is currently unused and housed at the Fire Department repair shop.

Reserve Apparatus Fleet
 

Engine 21

Engine 21 is a 1994 Spartan / Luverne pumper that was assigned to Engine Co. 11 from 1994 until 2005.  It is currently housed at the Fire Department repair shop on Liberty Street awaiting reassignment.

Engine 25

Engine 25 is a 1989 Spartan/Maxim pumper that was originally assigned to Engine Co. 1 from 1989 until 2002.  It is currently housed at the Fire Department repair shop where it serves as the primary reserve pumper.

Engine 27

Engine 27 is a 1987 Ford / Maxim pumper that was originally assigned to Engine 7 from 1987 until 1999.  It also served as Engine 9 for almost a year until October 2001.  It is currently housed at Station 7.

Ladder 24

Ladder 24 is a 1988 Maxim tractor-drawn aerial truck with a 100' ladder.  It was assigned to Ladder Co. 4 from 1988 until 2004.  It is currently the only reserve ladder truck in the fleet and is housed at Station 5.
