2+ Alarm Fire |
209 Coggeshall St. | 21:30 | Group B
On
arrival by Unit 2, a heavy smoke condition was found on floor 1 of a
vacant 3-story wood frame building, commercial occupancy on the first
floor. Initial attack crews located the seat of the fire in the
basement, however the fire extended up the walls and into the attic,
requiring an extensive overhaul to find and contain all pockets of fire.
Engines 8, 7, 1, 5, and 11, as well as Ladders 4 and 1 operated at the
fire. The fire is currently under investigation by both the NBFD
Fire Prevention Bureau as well as the State Fire Marshall's Office.
Special thanks to Brian Hardy for providing pictures and video of
the fire scene, as well as to the Providence Canteen for providing

Working Fire |
286 Tinkham St. | 00:30 | Group A
At approximately 00:30
hours New Bedford Fire Alarm began receiving numerous phone calls
reporting a structure fire at 286 Tinkham Street on the corner of Brook
Street. Box 329 was transmitted bringing Engines 8, 7, 1, Ladders
4 and 1, as well as Units 1 and 2 to the scene. Companies found
heavy fire at the rear of a 3-story occupied woodframe multifamily
residential. Engines 8 and 7 attacked the fire from the interior
and Ladder 1 vented the roof, since the fire had extended up the C-side
of the building into the attic. The fire was brought under control
in less than an hour, but companies remained on scene until
approximately 03:30 hours overhauling the blaze. Special thanks to
Brian Hardy for providing pictures and video of the fire scene, as well
as to the Providence Canteen for providing refreshments for our members.

- (Group D) - New Bedford Firefighters were once again called to battle
flames in a vacant, three-decker in the city's north end.
Firefighters arrived at the building on Acushnet Avenue just south of
Beetle Street to find heavy smoke coming from the second and third
floors. An interior attack was mounted but quickly called off due
to hazardous conditions inside the vacant building. A defensive
attack lasted well into the frigid night and brought all but Engine 11
and Ladder 3 to the scene. Special thanks to Dartmouth Fire
District 1 Deputy Chief Ed Cabral for contributing photos.

December 29, 2008
- (Group D) - Firefighters responded to a working fire in the area of 60
Hazard Street in the city's west end around 11:30pm on the night of
Monday, December 29, 2008. Fire alarm reported that police
dispatchers were receiving multiple calls for a house on fire in the
area. Unit 2 reported heavy smoke in the area while en route to
the scene and upon arrival, found a vacant 2-story wood frame
residential structure fully involved in fire. Companies responding
on the initial assignment immediately went to work to protect exposure
buildings on either side of the fire building, and thanks to their
efforts the damage to exposure buildings was limited to the exterior
only. After numerous hand lines and two aerial master streams were
put into operation, the fire was contained within about a half hour.
The initial response brought Engines 7, 1, and 8, as well as Ladder 1.
Ladder 4 was dispatched to the scene as a FAST team, and Engines 9 and 6
also were special called to the scene for manpower. Photos
