August 1, 2008 - (Group D)  New Bedford firefighters were called out to assist the United States Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in extinguishing a fire onboard the tugboat Canal Deluge on August 1, 2008.  Members of both Engine 1 and Ladder 1 responded aboard Marine 1 to a location a few miles south of New Bedford Harbor where the disabled tugboat was anchored.  The majority of the fire, which occurred earlier in the morning, had been contained by the Army Corps of Engineers tugboat Manamet, out of Buzzards Bay.  An assessment by NBFD members deemed the vessel safe to be towed into New Bedford harbor for repairs.  Marine 1 was on station for several hours with both the Manamet and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead.  Photos by Capt. Chmiel.

June 21, 2008 - (Group C)  Firefighters responded to a working structure fire at 1 Durant Court in the city's north end at approximately 5:45pm on the evening of June 21, 2008.  Arriving units found smoke showing from a two and a half story wood frame residential structure, which had already been evacuated.  Crews from Engine 8 and Engine 7 made an aggressive interior attack on the fire in the attic space, which had been converted into an apartment.  Despite the best efforts of the interior attack crews, fire conditions rapidly deteriorated inside and all crews were called out of the building, at which time a defensive attack was conducted on the fire.  The initial response brought Engines, 7, 8, 9, and Ladder 4 to the scene.  Engine 1 and Ladder 1 were also called to the scene.

Special thanks to Phil Sullivan from the Providence Citywide Fire Network for providing pictures of the incident.  For more photos, be sure to check out his website at www.wellinvolved.com.

May 9, 2008 - (Group A)  New Bedford firefighters responded to a fire in a vacant multi-family house at 20 Roosevelt Street in the south end, the third such fire in as many weeks.  Engines 11, 6, 1, Ladders 3 and 1 responded.  No photos are available from this incident.  Click here to read the story from The Standard-Times.

May 8, 2008 - (Group B)  An early morning fire in a three-story tenement caused heavy damage to the third floor apartment of 31 Princeton Street in the north end.  Firefighters arrived to find smoke pushing from the third floor windows.  After a brief interior attack by Engines 9 and 8, the fire was quickly brought under control.  The last units cleared the scene around 2:30am.  Engines 9, 8, 7, Ladders 4 and 1 responded to the incident.  No photos available for this incident.  Click here to read the full story from The Standard-Times.

April 28, 2008 - (Group D)  Approximately one hour after clearing the scene of a suspicious three-decker fire on Nye Street two blocks away, firefighters were again called to the same neighborhood for a working fire in another three-decker on North Front Street between Tallman and Holly Streets.  First-in companies found heavy fire conditions in the interior of the second and third floors of the building, and an interior attack was initiated, however due to deteriorating conditions the interior attack was quickly called off.  Companies went into defensive mode and attacked the fire from the exterior.  The fire penetrated through the roof and all three ladder companies engaged their aerial master streams in the defensive attack.  The fire threatened a nearby exposure and at one point, impinged the neighboring building, requiring an attack team to enter and attack the extension.  The initial response consisted of Engines 8, 7, 1, Ladders 4 and 1.  Engines 9 and 5, as well as Ladder 3 were also called to the scene to assist.  Reserve apparatus were staffed by off-duty members for manpower assistance throughout the city.

April 27, 2008 - (Group D)  Firefighters responded to a suspicious fire at a vacant three-decker at the foot of Nye Street, just west of Belleville Avenue around 11:00pm on the night of Sunday, April 27, 2008.  Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire conditions in the front of the building.  A 2.5" attack line was quickly put into service to darken down the main body of fire which was largely confined to the exterior of the building, with some extension into the attic.  Engines 8, 7, 1, Ladders 1 and 4 responded.  The fire was knocked down within twenty minutes and units cleared the scene shortly after midnight.

March 27, 2008 - (Group A)  New Bedford Firefighters were called to 204 Eugenia Street in the mid-afternoon hours of Thursday, March 27, 2008 for a reported structure fire.  First arriving units found heavy smoke issuing from the upper floors of a 3-story tenement on the south side of Eugenia Street, between Acushnet Avenue and Ashley Boulevard.  Engines 8, 1, and 9, as well as Ladder 4 were dispatched on the initial alarm.  The crews of Engine 8 and Ladder 4 conducted an interior attack and determined the fire to be in the attic of the building.  The fire later self-vented through the roof, however firefighters were able to extinguish the fire despite high-heat conditions in the attic.  A request for additional manpower brought Engines 7 and 5 to the scene.  Firefighters on scene were able to rescue several dogs from the house.

March 6, 2008 - (Group B)  Firefighters responded to a mid-afternoon structure fire on Foster Street, between Maxfield and Hillman Streets.  Upon arrival of Unit 2, fire and smoke was showing from the second floor of a 2-story wood frame structure with several exposures.  Engine 1, 7, and 8, Ladder 1 and 3 were dispatched on the first alarm assignment.  Arriving companies conducted an interior attack but were quickly evacuated from the building as conditions began to deteriorate rapidly within the building.  A second alarm was struck for the incident which brought Engine 6 and 11 to the scene.  An exterior attack was mounted and the fire was declared under control a short time later.  The building was heavily damaged, however firefighters were able to rescue numerous birds and two dogs from the first floor apartment.

January 26, 2008 - (Group B)  Firefighters responded to a boat fire aboard the F/V Five Princesses.  First arriving units found heavy fire and smoke showing from the deck as well as the pilot house.  Multiple hand lines were put into place to contain the fire as well as protect numerous pressurized oxygen tanks that were exposed to direct flame contact.  The fire was brought under control in short order.  Engines 1, 6, and 7, as well as Ladders 1 and 3 responded.

January 20, 2008 - (Group D)  At approximately 11:43am on the morning of Sunday, January 20, 2008, New Bedford Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in an unoccupied residential structure at the corner of South Sixth and County Streets.  First arriving fire apparatus found heavy smoke showing from a historic two and a half story wood-frame residential structure.  An interior attack was engaged until the structural integrity of the building became compromised, at which point, all units were evacuated from the house and an exterior attack was conducted.  At one point, all frontline NBFD apparatus were on scene assisting in the operation, and two reserve engines were staffed by off-duty, recalled personnel.  With the temperature hovering just below freezing, conditions on the fire ground became icy, and one firefighter was injured as a result.  Firefighters were on scene for well over 6 hours trying to contain the stubborn blaze.  (Photos by Capt. Steve Chmiel)
